The first portable monitor on our list is one of the very favorites going around. We like many others believe that the ASUS ZenScreen MB16AC is a very fantastic product and it is probably the best all-round performer. ASUS comes up with excellent monitors time after time; they have really mastered the craft of this area.

First things first, it is one of the lightest portable monitors in the market today and it is also one of the most dimension friendly ones as well. The monitor weighs just about 1.7 lbs without its protective case and measures only 0.3 inches (8mm) thick. All this make it the perfect road monitor. As for the design it looks fairly high quality and durable. The screen is quite shiny or glossy if you may and the monitor offers 3 buttons. The buttons on the left controls the brightness and other built-in color options whereas the button on the right is for power. There is a small hole on the bottom right corner which can be used to slide in a pen, this way you can use any pen to act as a stand base.

If you thought that was neat, wait till you see the protective case. The case attaches to the monitor via magnets and can be shaped into various styles to match the kind of stand you want it to be. The thought given to the standing aspect, in particular, is very impressive. There is a USB Type-C connection point on the left side which is used both as to draw power and as a display connected to the connected device. If the connected device does not have USB type-C you can attach an adapter or converter that is also given.

For features, you get 1080p FHD resolution along with an IPS panel on a 15.6-inch screen. The monitor offers very pleasing colors along with exceptional viewing angles through its IPS panel. You also get flicker-free technology, blue light filter and a few other color options built-in. The monitor can be connected to both laptops and phones via the USB cable.

One thing to note is that this monitor does not deliver very good brightness levels, so operating in daylight or outdoors might be an issue for some users. There is also an auto-rotate feature in the monitor as well. Overall, the ZenScreen MB16AC offers the complete package as far as portable monitors go. You even get some features which may enable it to be a gaming choice as well as a professional one such as GamePlus modes along with other effective color modes. The monitor is sort of costly though.

The next product on the list is the Gechic On-Lap 1503I monitor. This is a rather interesting piece of hardware which also has built-in touch screen capability. If you want one without touch screen you can go with its other version, the 1503h.

The Gechic 1503I has a high price tag. The design and build quality of the Gechic On-Lap 1503I are exceptional. The monitor is only 12mm thick but comparatively weighs a bit more than its counterparts at just over 1kg. Design-wise the monitor is fairly standard and nothing out of the ordinary, pretty basic. The settings and power buttons are located at the left side along with the connection ports. The monitor comes with a protective case which acts as a solid screen sleeve. The protective case is not only effective but also aesthetically pleasing.

The protective cover at the back of the screen has the stand attached. It can easily be unfolded to reveal 3 tilt angles whilst standing. The stand and the protective are very simply and effectively done. The monitor offers connections via HDMI, VGA and USB type-C cable; it also draws power from the USB Type-C as well. You also get a docking port at the back of the monitor.

It offers FHD 1080p resolution at 60Hz, IPS display with great colors and fantastic 170-degree viewing angles. The main feature of this monitor might as well be its touch screen capacity. You can essentially use any device you connect, including windows via touch. It allows for great use with a stylus as well so drawing abilities are also present. The docking feature at the back allows for users to be able to purchases its Dock to add a computer stick; what this does is that it makes the monitor act like an independent Tablet. You can also attach a battery pack to the docking station. This adds to the portability and casual experience of such a device. You can connect to Windows PC’s, Mac, wireless phones or other devices and even some consoles.

It might be troublesome or consuming to setup its connectivity features with some devices though. Overall, this product is a very different with multiple possibilities. To have it at number two in our list is mainly due to its unique nature. Getting such a product is only feasible if you have the all-round use for all its features, otherwise, you might as well get a tablet due to the expensive nature of this screen.

3. ASUS MB169B+

The Most Portable Choice

  • Incredibly portable
  • Relatively cheaper
  • Plug and Play functionality
  • Issues with Mac devices
  • Needs USB 3.0 for proper functionality

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 | Size: 15.6-inch | Refresh Rate: 75 Hz | Panel: IPS

Next up on our list is the ASUS MB169B+. This is the newer version of the MB168B and offers better and more enhanced features. The big selling point of this particular model is that it is the world’s thinnest and lightest portable monitor. It also costs lesser than most of such monitors.

It offers unmatched portability. The Sheer lack of weight at less than 1 kg is insane. The product measures just about 8mm thick only with its overall dimensions being 14.9 x 9.3 x 0.3 inches. The build quality is superb and classy with shiny metallic finishing all around the body of the monitor. It has absolutely no ports except for just the one USB- Type-A port at the left side. The power and brightness buttons are also located on the same side. The MB169B+ comes with a bag which not only acts as its cover but can also be rearranged to act as the monitors stand.

The monitor offers 1080p FHD resolution with an IPS panel. The older model had lower resolution and came with a TN panel. So, this model offers great viewing angles, fantastic colors and most importantly excellent straight-up plug and play with your USB cable. It’s a great choice for people who don’t have setups with a Type-C port.

One thing to note regarding this device, although ASUS stated that it has Mac compatibility, is that it actually is a bit hit or miss with Mac devices. Users may find issues connecting with Mac devices. Some users may even have issues with some Microsoft surface books as well. Converting the TYPE-A cable to a Type-C one most of the times does not help. Also, you have to connect this to a USB 3.0 or the monitor’s functionality will take a good hit. Brightness, color and lag might start to occur on USB 2.0 connections.

Overall, it is easily the world’s most portable monitor out there today. It has some issues which can be tackled with ASUS’s app, but for what it’s worth if you want the lightest and thinnest monitor to take with you on the go, this is the one.

4. AOC I1659FWUX

The Budget Pick

  • Excellent IPS performance
  • Easy to use
  • Budget friendly
  • Needs color calibration
  • Issues in darker colors

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 | Size: 15.6-inch | Refresh Rate: 75 Hz | Panel: IPS

The second last monitor listed here is probably the most budget-friendly monitor in our list. The AOC I1659FWUX is a monitor which not only took over from its predecessor but also overcame most of its shortcomings.

The AOC I1659FWUX takes a glossy approach to design even with most of the monitors going for a rather matte finish. The shiny portable monitor offers very manageable dimensions by measuring only 14.6 x 9.1 x 1.4 inches and weighing only 2.6 lbs. It still may be slightly larger and heavier than some of the other models listed in our article.

The monitor also offers just the one USB Type-C connection port just like most of the other portable monitors. At the back, is a built-in stand that just swivels out and can be adjusted to offer two levels of screen tilt. This is a cool feature to add, instead of the case or cover acting as the stand, it just gives an easier to use alternative. There is also VESA mounting option built-in at the back.

It gives users the demanded FHD 1080 resolution, with an IPS panel, for better viewing angles and colors. Usually, monitors such as this sometimes are not able to display good dark black colors, not in this case though. The I1659FWUX was able to display dark blacks at a very good level. The IPS panel also delivered exceptional colors and displays which were better than what we imagined. The darker grays were a point where the monitor did fall behind. It was not able to execute in this area. Although the monitor delivered fantastic colors, we first had to calibrate it to do so. Although it is plug and play, the user will have to adjust colors at the first launch.

Overall, it is a fantastic choice with no real weakness, to be honest. It is not too expensive; it has all the basic features needed for a portable monitor while also delivering excellent display and colors. The image quality might be decent at best but this will definitely not let you down.

5. ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE

Gaming On The Go

  • Built-in battery
  • High-end gaming features
  • Price tag is way too high
  • Speakers are subpar
  • Not suitable for a lot of people

Resolution: 1920 x 1080 | Size: 15.6-inch | Refresh Rate: 60 Hz | Panel: IPS

Last Update on 2020-06-11 using Amazon Product Advertising API

Last on our list is the most enthusiast-level piece of hardware in the entirety of the portable monitor category. We have the great monster gaming monitor that is the ASUS ROG Strix XG17AHPE. It was a good question of what would the best gaming portable monitor be if any, that question has been laid to rest.

The monitor offers extremely surprising manageable dimensions while measuring only 1cm thick. It also weighs quite less on its own at just over 1kg, but with its stand or cover attached, the weight shoots up to 3.1 kg. It has thin bezels and its protective adaptive stand can be used both as a protector and as a stand. Build quality is excellent; it definitely looks like a special product. It has a high-quality metallic finish to it. All the ports and buttons are located towards the left side of the screen. You will get the standard power buttons and other buttons to control display, and further down below you will see a USB Type-C, Micro HDMI ports and a 3mm headphone jack. It also comes with a powerful 7800 mAh built-in battery.

The user will get the unusual FHD 1080p resolution over an IPS panel. The usual specs are extremely jaw-dropping. You will get a max refresh rate of 240Hz, the response time of only 3 ms as well as many other groundbreaking features such as Adaptive-Sync technology. With this tech, you can always execute an extremely satisfying gaming experience with a tear-free image and ultra-smooth display. The brightness levels are also quite high. No issues in outdoors performance in daylight.

It can be used as a dedicated monitor by plugging the USB cable to a power source or as usually by connecting it to the device intended. It can draw power from its battery or the source. The battery can keep it running for 3.5 hrs on 240Hz full and can recharge in 1 hour quick charge for further 2 hrs at 240 Hz. The Eyecare and non-glare feature essentially reduce the strain on the user’s eye. The monitor also has 2 built-in speakers but sadly upon testing the sound quality left a lot to be desired and the audio was average at best.

Overall, this is the behemoth of the portable monitor game. It is a monster among mere monitors; the spec list is almost endless. Long story short if you have high budget to spare on a portable monitor, or if you like gaming on the go or even if you want to make people jealous, this is the perfect monitor for you.
